1930s Mountain West Interiors
Not all Mountain homes are new. This Deco-period home runs deep within Ogden Utah’s history (as the home of Browning family members {makers of the famous M1911 pistol}). The basement rooms were a particular challenge, as they had not been updated beyond their concrete floors, industrial built-ins, and extremely low hanging duct system. We remapped the HVAC and chose tile flooring (based off notorious flooding in the area), knowing that all rooms would eventually be covered in luxurious rugs. ** Now here is the design secret/principle. This particular Saltillo flooring has a VERY distinct light pinkish color, it is a hard shade to neutralize. Thus we planned on big materials in the room – the built-in doors and the rugs – to match the color of the flooring. Suddenly the flooring didn’t stick out anymore, it blended. Then fun pops of colors could be introduced without competition. Note: all of this is done in the planning stage, before a hammer is even swung. We knew what we were looking at before it was finished.
